Previous game: [community profile] exsilium. Fenris arrived in Exislium, to learn he'd be conscripted into a war on a completely different world, against the United Earth, who ultimately threatened all worlds, including Thedas. Given a magical link to his Blade of Mercy (which he never used to its full potential because magic) he begrudgingly helped and pretty much failed to make that many friends in his entire time there. He made like, three. Seriously. He did learn how to tolerate Merrill, an elf mage from his world, a little more. To the point where he stopped telling her she needed to die all the time, anyway. He also learned his world can have multiple outcomes, with multiple Hawkes, which is really disturbing as far as he's concerned. When the war was won, Fenris chose to go back to Thedas, his version of Thedas, along with Merrill. Instead, he gets to go to Drift Fleet. Happy times for him.

Species: Elf

History:

Fenris' story starts, like many elves within the Tevinter Imperium, in chains. Born with the name Leto, he was a slave to an unnamed magister for some time, until a magister by the name of Danarius offered high stakes for the position of his bodyguard. Leto fought and competed for the position, and when he won, he used to boon to free his mother and sister from slavery. Danarius had dark magic in store for the young elf, he tattooed Leto's skin with lyrium, a toxic, highly magical substance in their world. The lyrium would give Leto the ability to become semi-tangible and a truly difficult adversary to beat. Wanting to keep his prize to himself, Danrius stripped Leto of his memories before the branding, and renamed him Fenris. His 'little wolf'.

It was only by chance that Fenris learned of true freedom. He was left behind during a battle between a group of magisters and qunari. Badly injured, he was raised back to health by Quinari Fog Warriors, who taught him how to live for the sake of living, and to answer to no one. Still, when Danarius returned to reclaim his property, he ordered Fenris to slaughter his saviours, and Fenris obeyed, as he always had. It was too late, however, his eyes had already been opened, and horrified by his actions, he fled his master and eventually made it to Kirkwall.

There, he met the Champion and had many adventures. All of which are here. Most of his past follows this but as the action is based on player choice: he allowed his sister, Varania, to live, and learned the truth of his past. He has also gone through both the Legacy and the Mark of the Assassin DLCs.

Personality:

"Such a curious lad. The chains are broken, but are you truly free?"

The first thing people will notice about Fenris is that he has a lot of unresolved anger issues. He has lived for a long time in an impossible situation, every step he takes which he believes will lead him to freedom only making the situation harder. It has made him frustrated, and he has a tendency to lash out at others as a way to cope with it. He can throw a cutting remark as easily as he can wield a blade, often not caring if he hurts someone's feelings or not in the process. There are times, if he is close enough to a person, where he'll apologise for his actions, but these are few and far between, mostly because he doesn't LET people get close to him.

Which comes to the next point. Trust doesn't come easily to him, in fact, it hardly comes to him at all. His time of being a slave on the run has taught him that trust is a good way to get yourself captured or killed. Better to shut the world out, not let them near, then at least he'd have a chance of making it to the next day. Slowly but surely, he begins to allow Hawke and his companions closer to him, but trust is still something he only gives him small amounts, he even struggles to acknowledge them as his friends at all.

A lot of his distrust lies in magic and those who wield it, which he can't be blamed for. After all, magic was seared into his skin, making him a living weapon, it took away his memories and kept him captive for years. He watched the magisters of Tevinter use magic in the worst way possible, sacrificing innocent lives for simple party tricks. He has learned to despise anyone with an ability to use magic, believing it was only too easy for them to be swayed into the darkness, to make a deal with a demon, or to even become a magister. He knows magic has its uses, but he firmly believes all mages are just a step or two away from true destruction.

That is not to say he isn't able to relax once in a while. Once he knows a person well enough, he is willing to talk to them, in his awkward way, even occasionally cracking a joke. Though this is rare enough that Varric feels the need to write it down when it happens. Fenris is very cynical, and as such his humour follows suit. It's dry and guarded, and used only when he feels comfortable.

He has a tendency to be more sympathetic towards other slaves and other elves. Elves are treated in Thedas very much as second class citizens after all, and he understands what a struggle it is for his race to survive. Sometimes, it's easier for an elf to be a slave, than become a nomad with the Dalish or to cling to the city slums. Though he is sympathetic, it only goes so far. If they are unwilling to help themselves, he grows irritated with them, and is quick to show his contempt towards them. The Dalish are often treated as such, given their use of magic, and the fact Fenris feels they are clinging to an old life that elves will never have again.

With all of this going on inside his head, he tends to brood. A lot. He prefers to remain alone, in the dank mansion he stole, just being with his thoughts. He never bothers to clean up the place he lives in, letting corpses rot where they lay and leaving most of the rooms untouched. He's never seen a point, as he's never truly believed Kirkwall could be a permanent home for him. even after living there for years. His companions often point out his brooding tendencies, Varric even asking if it was a sport in Tevinter. When Fenris is left alone, you can bet brooding is what he'll be doing. Often with a bottle of wine.

He's a very skilled fighter, and doesn't let his personal issues get in the way of battle. He just gets on with it and leaves the talking for later. The lyrium he has branded into his flesh causes him constant pain, even more so when he uses it, but again, he does not allow this to bother him in battle. This is more from hard training with Danarius than out of any real desire. Fenris truly is a killer, but he takes no joy in it, nor does he feel overly remorseful for those he has killed. It's just the way of the world, if a battle must be fought, then casualties are inevitable, he sees no need to concern himself with this fact.

Though he's gained his freedom, Fenris remains very much still in bondage. Bound by his own hatred and prejudice he is unwilling or unable to shake off, he finds he is not truly free, a realisation that feeds his anger, becoming an unbroken circle. With only scattered memories of his past, he has no experience to fall back on in being free, perhaps he never planned to actually escape Danarius' clutches, perhaps he assumed he'd be dead by now, either way, Fenris has no clue how to live as a free man. He lives from day to day, taking the world as it comes and not daring to plan for the future. Why would he? When a future was something he could never have.

Abilities:

Fenris' skin is infused with Lyrium, an extremely dangerous and powerful mineral found in Thedas (think of it as akin to magical uranium), the lyrium making up the decorative tattoos all over his body. These tattoos give him semi-intangible abilities. He can activate them to phase through solid objects and become harder to track on the battle field. He tends to favour using this ability by phasing his hand into a person's chest, then solidifying his hand, crushing their heart in the process. Because he's a nice guy like that.
The lyrium also gives him all the abilities on the Tevinter Fugitive talent tree.

Fenris is also a warrior, and has such has these fighting talents (which mostly involve beating the shit out of things, or getting things to come closer so he can beat the shit out of them better):
Two-Handed - Blows and cuts with a two handed weapon.
Vanguard - Offensive talents.
Battlemaster - Stamina and taunting talents.
Defender - Defensive talents.
Warmonger - Stunning talents.

Augment Skillset: Security. Because...mercenary warrior. It's the only thing he'd be comfortable with.

Sample: Have a sample, hating demons, doin' the thing.
